Jay's best pick of the year

And considering all of the fantastic bands that Jay's gotten me into in the seven years we've been friends, that's saying a lot of 2009.

I really like St. Vincent (real name, Annie Clark). Her music is complicated and creepy, and I'm listening to her right now on Austin City Limits tearing s$%^ up and I love it. It's so nice to see another female artist who just plays as ferociously as a man, with music that is so large and bizarre and multi-faceted. Her music is a mismash of so many disparate things, it makes it anything but boring. I'm also surprised she's able to recreate the music on stage, since it is so multi-layered, but it sounds fantastic. Here is the St. Vincent song that got me hooked on the whole album (named "Actor")

It's been quite a while since I've bought any new music. Tegan and Sara's new album is out on Tuesday, and while it took me a long time to like "The Con," there are a number of songs that I appreciate right off the bat on their new album "Sainthood." I'm not sure I'll buy it first thing out of the gate, but I'm considering it. While their music is pretty great, and this album has the potential to be something quite different since most of the tracks are backed by a full band for once...the thing that makes them amazing is also what makes it hard to deal with. Their lyrics are all about depressing, dysfunctional relationships, and lord... who needs music for that? Haven't we all lived that? But the poetry in their music is hard to ignore, especially when it's got a good beat behind it. Enjoy the first single below.

Yes, yes. Miranda likes music with strong females and a strong female presence. I'm sure it's a shocker.
