So, I recently started dating a die hard Hokie football fan. We were talking about sports, and while I don't actively seek out sports, I don't have a problem with them. I mentioned that I'd like to go to a football game this fall, simply because I haven't and it seems like a really great experience. Eric responded to this enthusiastically, and said that he'd love to do that this fall.
"Great," I said. "oooh, and I'll bring my knitting, too..."
Conversation dies abruptly, while Eric looks at me in horror. It was as if I had suggested to him that I give everyone in Lane Stadium a lapdance during halftime.
"What?" I said. "I'll even knit something in maroon and orange, or I'll use Hokie themed knitting needles. What's the problem?"
"If you do that, I will not acknowledge your existence. You want to KNIT at a FOOTBALL GAME?"
"Yes, yes, I do."
"Would they even let you bring it into the stadium?"
"Haven't had problems taking it everywhere so far."
He continued to look at me incredulously.
So this is where I need your help. Have I committed a horrible Hokie faux pas? Am I insane to want to take knitting to a football game? I know that major league baseball regularly hosts "stitch and pitch" nights, how is football any different? Is my sports ignorance showing?
Gina, Mimi, Lauren, Allison, anyone else who wants to chime in, lemme know what you think! The more people who comment, the more proof I can give Eric when he looks at me like I'm insane...

it might be good to have needles available to "move" the occasional super annoying drunk fan-but then again your yarn and needles could get all icky from stadium grunge and that's never good-a conundrum for sure....but you need to convert that boy to knitting understanding at least or he is no good for you!! ;)
He doesn't mind the knitting occasionally, but he really did look at me like I was nuts when I talked about bringing it to a game. It was funny.
I married a man who wouldn't let me knit at football games. I'm not sure where he lives right now...if you get my drift. Bring him into Mosaic, we will learn him right!
Ok see the thing about football games are it all depends on where he sits. If he sits with a bunch of students they will most likely stand for the entire game and do cheers and chants and all the hoop-la. It's very strange at first but you get the hang of it after a while. So if he's in that general section you'd stand the entire game. If he's with the old people they tend to sit for the game, but again there are a lot of drunk people and the stadium is dirty. We had a drunk guy barf on our shoes one time, it was not pretty. I do love knitting, but even I don't bring yarn to the stadium. I think baseball is different because the fans aren't quite as into the game as Hokie Fans are.
Did that make any sense?
Yes, people knit at the game. Either Marilyn or Kit can fill you in on the pros and cons.
