yay! congrats!! what a relief! for the plastic yarn I cut up, I found a website that showed how to cut it up-basically in loops by folding the flattened bags tall-wise into a 1-inchish wide final piece then cutting that into 1 inch peices that, when unfolded make loops (i know that sounds weird-if you google "plastic bag yarn tutorial" it will show you) and then linked each loop together with the next by slipknotting it (again, on the tutrial) I makes a double width arn so it is not as flimsy and when knitted is pretty strong. I think I had some linke to patterns on my blog but if not, you can find some pretty easily online for free and they seem pretty simple. have fun! i LOVE my re-usable bags-so much nicer than those plastic ones braking the minute you put anything heavier than a kleenex in them!
BUT, I forgot to add, it takes FOREVER to cut up the dumb bags and link them-each shopping bag takes like 30 or so bags cut into strips which does not go very fast, just giving you a heads up. that was the most annoying part but otherwise, it is fun :) you can also use old videotape if you have any VHS tapes that have kind of lost their oomph, just an FYI if you want to avoid all the strip cutting
